Nov. 11 – Solar Observing (Mercury Transit)

On Monday, Nov. 11, the Headlands will be hosting a free solar observation from 9-11 a.m. to watch Mercury transit across the sun. The Northern Michigan Astronomy Club (NOMAC) will have a telescope fitted with a solar filter available for guests to observe the transit, weather-permitting. The next time Mercury will transit the sun is 2032. What makes this particular transit especially notable is that Mercury will pass almost directly through the center of the sun. The last time it was this close was in 1973 and it won’t be this close again until 2187. As Mercury will be too small to see using solar eclipse glasses, the only way to see this event is with a properly-filtered telescope. Mercury’s transit will also be streamed live on NASA TV/Facebook Live. (Please note – Looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection can cause permanent damage to your eyes, please do not look at the Sun without proper eye protection.)
